Lunar Culture in Seoul
Korea's Chuseok (harvest moon) festival is one of the country's most important holidays, celebrating the autumn full moon with ancestral rites and traditional foods including songpyeon (half-moon rice cakes). Gyeongbokgung Palace hosts moonlit evening openings during full moons. The Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute traces its heritage to the Joseon Dynasty's celestial observation instruments at Changgyeonggung.
How the Moon Affects Seoul
The Yellow Sea coast near Seoul has an extreme tidal range of 8-10 meters at Incheon, among the largest in the world. This dramatically affects port operations, mudflat ecology, and the Korean seafood industry. The traditional Korean lunar calendar (Eum-ryeok) governs the timing of most Korean festivals and many business customs, including auspicious dates for weddings and openings.
Best Moon Viewing in Seoul
Namsan Tower (480m) provides the most accessible elevated view in Seoul. Bukhansan National Park's peaks offer darker skies. Autumn (September-November) provides the clearest and most culturally significant moon viewing, particularly during Chuseok.
