The Archenhold Observatory in Treptower Park houses the longest refracting telescope in the world (21 meters) and was where Einstein presented his theory of general relativity in 1915. Berlin's Zeiss-Grossplanetarium in Prenzlauer Berg is one of Europe's most advanced planetariums. The city's Cold War division meant East Berliners had darker skies, and amateur astronomy clubs flourished in the east.

Germany is the birthplace of the modern biodynamic farming movement.
